My son started with contacts last year (he was 13), so you have no problem there.

My son also did some catching last year. I asked him about getting dirt in his eyes, and he said sometimes that would happen. Also the wind can dry them out some.

Does he strictly catch? What about using one of those mounted eye shields that fit into the catchers mask? I think they have clear, amber, and smoke grey.

We always have extra contacts with us when we go to tourneys..that's whats nice about the dailies, they come in little packages in their own solution.

We just went through buying some good sunglasses (had cheapos last year). He was hoping to take some fly balls this weekend and try them out, but its been raining.
My son was a catcher. Had very poor eyesight. His uncorrected vision was something like 20/700, but correctable to 20/20. He got "coke bottle" glasses in the first grade and started wearing contacts when he was about 12-13. He caught all through high school, college and pro ball without any problems with contacts. Never lost a contact during a game and never had any more trouble with dirt in his eyes than someone without contacts. I HIGHLY recommend contacts if the optometrist indicates he's a candidate for contacts.

PS: it was a big deal to him when he went to contacts and could finally get a pair of Oakley sunglasses.

Absolutely go with contacts. My son has been catching for two years with his contacts (since age 11). He doesn't really have issues with dirt in his eyes. It has only happened once this season and he just put lubricant drops in his eye. Just make sure to get the disposable (daily or weekly) contacts and have extra ones with you at the games. Also carrying a travel size bottle of saline solution and lubricant drops is also a great idea just in case (we use Aquify brand solution and drops as it feels very smooth in the eye). He just keeps them in his bat bag in the dugout. Hope this helps! Smile
