The Phillies have released outfielder Geoff Jenkins and are hoping to sign Gary Sheffield, who was released by the Detroit Tigers today. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the Phillies have contacted Sheffield's agent and are in a wait-and-see mode.

The only "tank" Sheffield has is when he purposely "tanked" on the Brewers. There can no respect for any player, in any sport, who intentionally boots balls in order to leave a team. Baseball is about character, and team camaraderie, and he has neither.

I realize it was spring training but he was ONLY hitting .178. Maybe the bat has slowed..he is old and no longer using the "cream" for assistance. The Tigers wanted to go in another direction and didn't need the distraction, you don't eat 14 million unless there is a valid reason.

Last years stats:

.225 19 57

only slugged an even .400 obp was .326 had 19 GDP's and his OPS+ was 90.

He is done. He WAS a great hitter but that is past tense.
The only advantage of his going to the NL is that it will be as a 4th outfielder/pinch hitter role. If in the AL he would expect to be the everyday DH and as last season and this spring has shown he isn't an everday player anymore. Not sure he is the type of player that can handle the emotional role of a part time player. Sometimes the physical part goes before the mind is ready to let go. Sounds like he is at that point in his career right now.

Aren't the Tigers paying his contract regardless who he plays for and can get signed for the minimum?. Sounds like a team can get him on the cheap. Not a bad deal for a team that needs a big bat.
He can be picked up for the veteran minimum with the Tigers obligated to pay the balance.
