I have a player that is a very good golfer. But I am trying to break him of lunging forward. He gets his hips through the ball very good, but instead of finishing with his head and butt over the middle of his stance, he lunges forward and finishes with all of his weight over his front foot. I have shown him, but just resorts back to the natural golf swing. Is there any drills I could have him do, or any message I could relay to him to help him keep his weight more over the middle of his body.

I try to have my players keep there hands inside the ball and finish high over back shoulder, instead of around . More shoulder to shoulder swing, "around his body". I believe this is where kids tend to roll there wrist too soon and hit around the ball and drive the ball into the ground to the left side of the field for right hand hitters. I will use the carousel image to try and get his hips rotating rather than lunging.

"I teach the hands together as one unit. Usually when one hand is "weak" it is the top hand, but it really isn't. The top hand is attached to the backside and the backside is failing to put both hands in the position to rip the barrel through."

This may be helpful from very informed poster named PaPa from another thread.

Just remember, the top hand is not along for the ride anymore like in a golfswing.

Your player is pushing off his back foot and extending his back leg causing his head to go over his front leg. The drill I use with kids that do this is to have them carry center into toe touch against a wall with no bat. Turn from center which powers shoulders to turn and the hands end up centered with chest. Four things I look for are: 1. Firm front leg, 2. back heel to the sky with bent back leg, 3. hands in the box (forced because of wall), 4. head behind front leg. Have them wear a cap and if they are pushing with straight back leg, the cap will hit the wall and fall off their head. Repetitions, and more repetitions. I then have them do a stop swing drill with bat and finish in the same position as they did against the wall. Hard to explain in words, but my students with this problem have had a lot of success with this drill.
Thanks you everyone! I like the stayback tee and think it is a great product. I am going to have to purchase one. Mountainman I love your idea and am going to give it a try tonight. I just like the idea of hitting off the tee instead of without a bat. Kids sometimes just go through the motions with out a bat.

Again thanks and maybe I can get some positive feed back here rather than just the laughing icon (I thought it was probably a common problem).
