hold up there buddy (talkin to u pirate fan) just askin becuase some umps that i know help out the players kinda like a second coach. whats the need for the rudeness? i guess u dont love your job that much if u gonna act like that and not help out people. but hey some people are like that but i wont let u hold me back. and watch u say somethign smart back, thats the funny part
Sub 7 is a good time period.....so yours is very good.

I will agree that at lower levels, an umpire can be a good source of information and assistance. At the high varsity level and above....coaches coach, umpires umpire and players play. Any advice or education is usually not welcomed from umpires.

I have had many good interactions with players at the sub varsity and PONY/COLT league levels, but it is not in the best interest of the game for umpires to "coach".

But then again thats one reason why I post here...you can get my opinion on any subject for free.....( just remember what free advice is worth)
Hope this helps.....

Pirate fan, ever wonder why some people give umpires a hard time? You shouldn't have much trouble figuring it out.

I can't understand any adult worth being on the field being so rude to a kid who's seeking advice. Whether the kid has any business asking in this forum is irrelevant. You're probably really a Bruins fan, more of a hockey mentality.
It's very simple, and Piaa_ump stated it more eloquently than I did. At the high school level coaches coach; players play; and umpires ump. That's the way it is.

At the lower levels in rec ball, I will help and aid anyone, exspecially the coaches. But at high school it's not happening.

If an ump gives "advise" to a player at the high school level it could be seen as "favortism" to that team. That would then take away the objectivity of the ump.
Skip,
Pirate fan may have chosen the wrong word, but help us out with your opinion here as well....

As a HS coach, do you want an umpire to give advice to your player?

It has been my experience that most HS coaches do not want an umpire coaching or offering advice at the varsity level....

From an Umpire point of view, offering advice or coaching could be misconstrued as bias from the stands.....Clearly we are speaking Varsity level here.....

At a PONY league game I may mention to a pitcher he should make sure he comes to a stop in his motion........at the Varsity level, its not acceptable......we just call the balk if it doesnt happen

Interested in your opinion....
No I don't want an ump out there giving out advice or tips.... even if they are a good baseball guy and know what they are talking about. I like umps that are relaxed and not opposed to visiting with players; but keep it professional, like, "have you guys had good weather for your games?" or "you've got a lot better looking moms over here at your yard than they have over at X-town."
And even if I did needle ya a little P-fan, I really do like umps (and I like to ump).
So for my answer: I like the guys in blue to enjoy being there but don't coach the kids.
