One of the Oldtimers gave us some advice in a PM which my son thought was great, so I wanted to share it. The Oldtimer suggested that my son attend (as a spectator) a showcase tournament, to see how the big boys do it. We weren't able to go to an event this summer, but did attend the PG NE Qualifier last weekend. My son said he got a lot out it, and was really glad we went. He is a catcher, and picked up some pointers by studying what some of the catchers were doing. He also saw how many college scouts attend these events (it is completely obvious), and how they rotate from game to game. Hint: never let down your effort.

When we were leaving he said he felt really good about going. He thought he could get there skill-wise, and he has better focus on what he needs to work on.

Not naming names since I didn't ask permission, but thanks to you-know-who (the Oldtimer) for giving this suggestion, and thanks to all of those ahead of us in the journey who take the time to share their experiences and advice.

We were at the Qualifier this weekend and it was well run, nice facility, well attended by MLB scouts and colleges. My son did very well for his team, and received great exposure at this event.

You received good advice about going to check out this event. Your son is getting a good start at understanding what it takes to get to the next level.
Great advice. It is really good to not just go and watch MLB games, but to go watch every level you can. Take your son to as many college games at different levels as you can. As well, if you ever get the chance to see minor league games (at all levels), or pro/college players work out, do it. He'll pick up a lot and gain confidence. I distinctly remember a time in my career when I actually played against some top prospects and realized that I was right there and belonged on the same field. That kind of confidence boost was priceless and has stayed with me since. You can get the same effect by watching too. Soak up the game as much as you can! (I can't tell you how many hours I've spent watching big league hitters and catchers on TV, and especially on mlb.com highlights - so you can slow it down and rewind)
