Son has been hitting lately(batting around .500) but his swing has been a bit off.Had a big session yesterday going back to the basics with some Epstein drills.11 years old.

It payed off tonight,he finally got his first ever grand slam. Big GrinIt was his 2nd homerun of the short season but his 1rst was in the 1rst game.

BUT,we lost the game Frown

PLUS,he went to the doctor and he said don't be surprised if he grows 3" in the next 6 months.Grew a 1/2" in the last 5 weeks. Eek

Sorry for this kind of post but I had to tell someone. Smile

Eleven years old and batting .500? I think I would have passed on the Epstein drills and gone to Dairy Queen for a pineapple shake!
Yea,he was still putting the bat on the ball but had lost alot of his power. He even made the comment to me that his form was way off so we worked on it.

BUT,I made him come to me.

I just went back and looked,he was batting .437 coming into tonights game, not quite as well as I thought, but not too bad either.

Why not?

It's fun for us to look back in a couple years and see what he was doing then verses now.

As you could see,I wasn't exactly sure what his average was,not like I was checking after every at bat.Just written down on his schedule what he did in each game.

After the first couple games last year,I quit keeping up with it and wished I had written it down so I decided to write it down this year.

Well, I would not say useless. It depends in what context the data is being used. Information is good if used properly. Using to see if trends are moving in the ground balls, line drives or pop ups area could be useful. I would keep it for a teaching aide to help to identify areas, but as a whole its useless as just a number, I agree.
Within the universe that they play, stats will tell you who makes contact and who shows ability to hit for power at the field size being used.

Stats will also tell you who is reliable on defense and who is better suited for another position.

Kids who have gone deep into the Little League World Series are remembered and given a look during their high school and travel ball careers.

Even the Ethical Culture score keepers who only mark hit or out will still give a tip on who hits the ball and who makes the play.
How fun. My son got snowcones for doubles or better. Fun times.

FYI: the growth spurts are a trip. For a while my son couldn't run. I mean, he looked really weird running. I wish I had a video of it. He hit a no doubt about it triple when he was your sons age, and barely made it to third. It was funny. He's now very fast, so don't worry if things get out of kilter for awhile during and after a growth spurt.

Same thing happened to me when I was a kid. I hit a growth spurt and pretty much lost all my speed.......that time period lasted for about the next 15 some odd years and I think I'm still in it. Big Grin
