Everyone says a team must be strong up the middle but the average salaries don't reflect it. I know averages are probably a bad barometer but I think these numbers are interesting - numbers are based on the rosters of MLB at the begining of the season. My going in thought was that catchers are the most underpaid. SS dollars are skewed higher because of the Yankees:
POSITION AVERAGE SALARY (# IN POSITION)
1ST BASE - $4,223,424 (42)
OUTFIELD - $3,541,767 (156)
3RD BASE - $2,937,257 (42)
SS - $2,407,884 (66)
PITCHER - $2,314,767 (401)
CATCHER - $2,061,982 (65)
2ND BASE - $1,772,967 (52)
