Baseball vs. No. 17 Georgia Tech Postponed
3/28/2008 - CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Today's Atlantic Coast Conference matchup between Boston College (11-11, 2-7 ACC) and No. 17 Georgia Tech (19-5, 5-4 ACC) has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader tomorrow, with the first game starting at 11:30 a.m.

The expected high Saturday is 35 degrees. I'll bet it's below freezing when the first game starts. Right now it's 31 in Chestnut Hill with the wind chill at 22 degrees. It was snowing as I drove through tonight. I was thinking of going Saturday, but I'm not into freezing my rear off to watch baseball.

Two years ago, on March 20, my son had a game that started at 4:30. The sky was gray, and because it was still Central Standard time, it wasn't really light. The temperature at game time was 32, with a very stiff wind--25-30 mph steady right out of the north and blowing directly at home plate. It was cold. Brutal. The team played three innings--no one played well, it was too cold to field a ball or throw it. The ump finally called the game---because a security light on a far-away building was turned on and shining directly into the batters' eyes. Thank goodness.

But that night, my son said to me, "Mom, I hurt my shoulder."

The game didn't count. It was in that game that he tore his labrum diving for a ball.

Sometimes, it's just too cold to play.

It's normally in the low-50's here this time of year--sweatshirt weather for us--but because of La Nina we've had one winter storm after another come through. It is the worst Spring weather I've ever seen since I've lived here. It's snowing right now. Bum, Jr.'s team is now 5-0 but hasn't played in a week! There were supposed to be scouts out at the last game he pitched but.. cancelled again.

(Sigh.)

Warming to the mid-50's with sunshine next week. I can't wait. That sounds downright tropical to me right now.
In a fleeting moment of bravery I went to the second game. I went. I saw. I froze. I met GT fans who where really cold. Hell, the BC fans were really cold. There wasn't a concession stand. So no hot drinks.

GT's third baseman Feltes put on a show with two bombs and a couple of nice fielding plays. I always enjoy talking to fans at college games. I had a unique experience yesterday. There were little kids wearing GT hats but their parents were obviously from the area. I met two sets of parents who were watching their "adopted" sons from the Cape League.
