”I recently have two different kids that are throwing the baseball from their ear”
This mechanical condition, we call “grabbing” is caused from improper pendulum swing and ball to driveline height, arrival transition timing then not engaging their Lat’s during early transition making the transition to late.
quote:“They get good extention in the back “
At this point the glove arm leg should be down and the ball arm hand should be under the ball supinating, thumb up
quote:“but the first movement after that is to the ear”
This is one of the most important moments in the transition to prevent ‘grabbing”
That causes forearm centripetal (elbow bone degradation) imperative causing forearm looping (shoulder degradation) then bounce (UCL degradation)
Before the ball actually make any forwards movement. This action is a shoulder injury waiting to happen.
quote:“then away from the body to throw”
This is the centripetal path that degrades the shoulder and elbow with all traditional pitchers
The fix,
When they are at the back in their initial forwards force position they should start the ball directly to the plate by locking their Humerus in line with their shoulders line and immediately rotate the elbow up so that when they start their shoulder rotation the humerus comes with the shoulders as the forearm is still behind the Humerus at initial forwards force. They will have to attain a higher arm vector.
The drill,
This is a Latisimus dorsi isolation drill that will help tremendously with this grabbing problem. It gives the player the feel and neural switching to engage the Lat’s as the primary mover to throw with instead of the peck. We throw 20 before every bull pen.

This drill is now called the “half reverce pivot”
