I played baseball my freshman year for 1 semester at a private 4 year college but decided to sit out the remainder 3 years to focus on my grades. Is it common for some students who enroll as a grad school student to play baseball on the D1 level? I'm 22 years old, I have a personal trainer that is helping me and I will also joining a local baseball facility here. I could really use some guidance. Thanks

Just wanted to update what I posted regarding eligibility. When I wrote that something in the back of my head said I missed something. I remember graduating from college (D2) thinking I had 1 year left in a sport other then track (competed for 4 years)...

For D1 - You have 5 years to play 4 years as I said. The clock starts ticking when you enter college as a full time student. Not when you sign you eligibility paperwork.

For D2 & D3 - You have 10 semesters of full time school to complete your 8 semesters of eligibility. The clock in D2 can stop ticking if you leave school for a period of time. For example if you are a traditional student and attend school for 4 years straight you have used up 8 of your 10 semesters of eligibility. If you were red-shirted you can go to grad school full time for the last year to finish off your career. Now say you start in school and complete 3 years and then drop out for whatever reason. You were on a team for 1 of those 3 years. At this point you have used up 2 semesters of eligibility playing and you took 6 semesters to do it. So you 4 semesters left to complete your remaining 6 semesters of playing time. In effect you have lost 1 year (2 semesters) of playing time as you only have 4 semesters left to complete your time.

Confused? Its pretty simple in your case. If you are D1 and you started school in 2008 and graduated in 2012 you have until the end of the 2012/2103 school year to complete your eligibility. As long as you are a full time student (under grad or grad) you can compete in that last year.

If you are in D2 or D3 and started as, and remained, a full time student from 2008-2012 you have used up 1 semester of playing time over 8 semesters of eligibility. Thus you have 7 semesters of playing time left but only 2 semester to complete them in. So in reality you have 2 semesters left. Those two semesters will be there in 10 years if you leave school now, but if you attend another 2 semesters of school without playing you loose all your eligible playing time.
@ohsbball -
That is a totally different scenario. I'm not sure how transfer eligibility between NAIA and D1 works. Though I would guess that as its D1 you still have 5 years to play your 4. Which means if you have been in school for 4 years you only have 1 year left.

Your best bet is to talk to the coach/athletic department at the school you are trying to transfer to. They should know how all this works.
ohsbball, to be eligible at a Div. I school as a grad student transferring from another school, you'll need to qualify for the One-Time Transfer Exception (which you certainly should since you haven't played the last 3 years). And, as was mentioned earlier, you will have only one year available if you will have been in school for four years when you graduate in May.

As far as whether a Div. I coach will have a spot for you given that you haven't been on a team in 3 years is another story.
