Everything came together perfectly for Derrick on that play...especially the placement of the chairs in the bullpen! He narrowly avoided taking a seat in one of them!
Thanks for posting that floridafan.

That might be the greatest catch I've ever seen.
Yes, I read the Rule 7.04 comment, but still wonder why it wasn't a HR. Can a fielder open the OF gate or jump the fence and and stand there to catch a ball on the fly?

He is allowed to go over a divider (imaginary or actual) to make a catch, but actually being on dead-ball territory would render the catch invalid.
Always thought the rule should be if the person lands over the fence with the ball it should be a home run but this does make for some outstanding plays
Awesome catch! Out to dinner and just saw it being played on t.v.
I was going to post the video and ask if it's a legal catch. If you play it full screen at 480dpi it appears he's entirely cleared the fence when he made the catch. But it's a tough call at full speed for an umpire. Can you imagine the reaction if it was ruled a homer?
The fielder can fall over the fence after the catch. If there are runners they advance. The fielder can't make a play on them.quote:Originally posted by dad43:

Glad he wasn't hurt, a very athletic play!
A believe a four foot fence makes this catch look more spectacular than it is. It's a great catch. But the guy didn't elevate six to eight feet for the catch.
Wow RJM tough audience
It's a great catch. I just believe the four foot fence provides the illusion of a great leap. Maybe I'm analyzing it this closely because another poster called it the greatest catch ever.quote:Originally posted by dad43:

Yeah to be the greatest catch ever he needed to stick the landing by sitting in the chair he just missed
On the beach this weekend, I must have seen ten different groups of kids trying to re-enact this catch in the surf with a tennis ball. "You have to jump backwards completely over the wave and catch it with one hand and..." Sure, a lot depends on the thrower, but believe me, it's just as hard as it looks.
