Watching the Angels game today and this situation came up.

R1 w/ 0 outs. Runner stealing (no effect on the call just setting the situation.) Ground ball to shortstop, fields the ball and trys to beat R1 to the bag for the force. R1 slides in safe to second before the SS. SS then throws to first and the ball goes out of play. R1 is awarded home and BR is awarded second.

The announcers are clueless as to why. I believe I understand why. If the ball is thrown out of play on the first play in the infield the award is two bases from TOP. My understanding is the attempted force out is the first play and thus the award is now two bases from TOT. R1 is awarded home because he had acquired second. BR is awarded second because he had not reached first.

Is my understanding correct?

They played the umpires miked explanation, not sure which U was talking, but he knew the call was right, but boy he sure butchered getting it out..
But got it out, not the 1st play by the inf, time of throw.
Looked on the "SuperSlow" replay R1 was out to me, front leg never touched anything, following knee finally contacted the bag after the SS's touch, real time looked safe. Any rate safe, right call.
