NCAA rules apply. The play was R1, 0 out. Grounder to ss, ss tries to tag 2nd but doesn't get there, runner was called safe but initially thinks he's out so he starts walking toward the 1st base dugout, ss throws wildly to 1st and b-r decides to take 2nd base passing R1 who is now between 1st and 2nd... 2nd baseman gets the ball tags b-r who is on 2nd base and tags R1 who is between 1st and 2nd. What have you got?

2 out's and nobody on. Maybe.

R1 upon return, could have been out for giving up and leaving, doubt it though, sounds like it all happened pretty quickly?

If blue calls him out for abandenment then that's one out, no pass by the BR, safe at 2nd.

If blue wasn't convinced R1 had given up yet, BR out on the pass and R1 out on the tag.

If blue wasn't convinced yet, BR out on the pass, followed by the abandonment call, guess it depends on the weather, got a kid on the team? Kidding of course. What R1 does is the key.
If R1 is between 1B and 2B, I am not calling abandonment b/c he has an opportunity to correct things and go to 1B or 2B. He has that option still and thus reinstates the force at 2B. BR passes, then I have an out for passing a preceding runner and R1 out on the tag.

For me, this is a DP. Just make sure the signals are clear on the calls. Especially the one being made on R1 at 2B so it is clear he wasn't out at that time.

This is one that is probably a HTBT to even consider the abandonment call but I don't think I would be calling that. Simply b/c of this: how many steps will be allowed before deciding to call it? What if he does realize it just as the umpire is about to call him out?

Just having a little fun TR.

It doesn't sound like R1 has left the baseline so he's not out for abandonment. B/R out for passing, R1 out on the tag. Yes coach - you have a question?
