I would like to get some opinions on what other coaches think about guest players. I have read many a proud website, or newspaper article about State or National Championship teams that would not have done nearly so well if they did not pickup 2-3 great pitchers / players to help them win. After seeing the effect on the players that have gotten various teams to these championships that get benched so that the guests can play, I'm not sure I believe it is a good rule any more.
Just curious....looking for other thoughts. Good coaching can eliminate much of the distress.

This is a great bb compared to many!! Smile

I know the origin of the rule for many organizations ... it's to protect pitchers.

So many teams qualify to attend national tournaments at younger ages by winning in tournaments where they will play 3-4 games over a weekend. Now they are going to play possibly a 10-game set over a 7 day period.

MOST (not all) of these teams just don't have that many arms. The pitchers wouldn't get sufficient rest between appearances. Without this rule, a select few large organizations would win every tournament by outlasting the competition.

Handling bringing on additional players for a national tournament requires thoughtful coaching.

T-ball,

I understand where you're coming from on BOTH sides of this equation. Both of my son's have been picked up by out-of-town and out-of-state teams for this purpose. We have also been on teams that pick-up these pitchers at the end of a long season when heading to a world series.

It is like the "Scales-of-Libra" and requires a delicate balance by the head coach to prevent the bickering. Our head coach called a special parents meeting and allowed everyone a vote.

Some coaches will take it upon themselves to do what they think is best for the "glory of the team" and not the playing time of the players.

The objective of the coach is "to win".
The bjective of the parent is "to play".

I feel that the picking up of pitchers for this purpose is ultimately the best way to go because it is in reality "all about the team" and not about "the playing time".

When teams spend thousands on these out of state world series they tend to want to go all the way to the championship game if possible.

Rec ball is more about equality and teaching and select ball is more about competitiveness and the reality of baseball. JMHO
