My '09 son received an "invitation only" request from a Mets scout to attend a workout (Nov. 8th) at a small D3 college in Georgia, along with several players. He stated he would only throw a bullpen with no radar guns. They have seen him pitch on 2 occassions and only want a closer look at his mechanics. They will also have a hitting session that he will be allowed to participate, no throwing here - only hitting.
Also, a Pirats scout asked him last week if they could set up a time for him to throw.
I am under the impression this OK??? (HELP)
I would like to know if this is normal and what he can and cannot do, so he doesn't violate any rules impacting his upcoming college career.
Can they offer coaching tips?

The scout has assured me that no agents will be present.

What is normal?? What you describes sounds normal. Sure they can give him coaching tips. It's OK to work out with a pro scout at any time. Just don't take gifts or money from pro representatives or enter into agreements with agents/advisors. The majority of "contact rules" the NCAA has in place are there to protect the athlete from college coaches and has nothing to do with pro scouts.

PS: Like 3FingeredGlove stated I started to say some expenses are not considered "gifts or money" and are OK but wasn't sure how it was worded. ---- On the lighter side, if they offer you enough money and gifts (2 or 3 million $$$) I wouldn't worry about the NCAA! Big Grin Big Grin
