Good evening,
So here is the situation. A team in my league has won 13 straight titles, and has not lost a league game since 2006. We played them on their field on a friday and they no-hit us, winning 3-0. This was the first time my school had taken them to the 7th inning.
We hosted them on the following Tuesday. My boys forgot to show up to play ball and we quickly fell behind 8-0. Going to the 7th we were looking at a perfect game.
My first batter was my 9th place hitter, all season long he has only be able to bunt (he is really fast so he gets on a bunch). THis time he bunted foul for the 3rd strike. My leadoff hitter get plunked to ruin the PG. So my #2 hitter comes up he is batting 178 for the season, so I ask him to bunt the runner to second. He is successful and even reaches base on an error. Now I have runners on 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. My number 3 hitter also lays down a bunt, and reaches on an error as well. Now we are trailing 8-1 and still being no hit.
My #4 hitter ropes a single driving in 2, before the #5 hitter strikes out to end the game.
Was I wrong in calling for a bunt in the 7th, the other coach is PO'd at me.
I just really was trying to get my guys into the game, thinking we still had a small chance at the game.
What should I have done?

Sorry for the long post, just needed to vent a little.

If I'm doing the math correctly you lost 8 - 3 with one hit. I think you made some great moves in that inning to create opportunities for your team. That is the name of the game - do what you can to help your team win. You were facing a superior opponent and one of the greatest things you can teach your team is they have to compete. Win, lose or draw you have to compete. Going out and competing will help your team get better. Take this as a teaching moment - your bunch took the bottom part of the lineup and started a 3 run rally. You capitalized on their mistakes forced by your team executing. Get them to realize if they can do this in several innings then the teams who aren't supposed to lose can actually get beat.

Who cares what the other guy thinks - I think you did something that can be built around for your team.

You did nothing wrong. However, something doesn't add up right. If he had a perfect game through 6, you would have lead off with your leadoff hitter in the 7th inning. No big deal, just trying to understand the situation.
Last time I checked the offense had the job of trying to get on base and score. The defense has the job of trying to prevent this. Unless this dramatically changed overnight, you did nothing wrong. Sounds like you helped the other team learn about a weakness they need to improve on, and you taught your kids that they are never completely out of a game. Well done.
While I can understand the viewpoint that if you are down 8-0 if you feel you have a shot to win the game it is not the smartest move ever to be sacrifice bunting no matter who is the hitter. On the other hand given the reputation of the other team and the situation I can understand your point of view as well. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
