Watching college baseball, specifically UF/SC, I've noticed that most if not all players have wrapped their bats with white tape. If I guess correctly, I think I've seen this before and it is over the factory grip of the bat, to get a fatter handle and in some cases a very large, sloping knob at the end.

I've seen these and also bat "tapers" in stores which accomplish the same thing, so I thought I'd give it a try today on an old bat and really liked the change - rotation was easier, and there was less friction on the bottom/front hand during extension. I'm considering using a bat taper thing, is there any reason it might be illegal, or any reason not to do so?

It's legal, Sosa and a few MLBers do the same thing. If you ad the taper, you will be adding about .5 to 1 oz to the bat....BUT..... it's on the other side of the hands, this in turn changes the balance point of the bat, making it feel lighter to swing.

If you don't beleive me take an ordinary hammer, using your wrist with a normal grip at the base of the handle, swing it op and down using your wrist, then flip it upside down holding just above the head and do the same thing. Same weight, different balance points.
