How do you handle the situation when a player argues with the umpire? Does it change when you disagree with your player?

I ask this because I have seen two approaches by the coaches on the two teams I've played with this year. One would go directly to the umpire and start arguing for his player. The other would yell for his player to stop arguing.

If you're objective is to keep your player in the game, arguing respectfully with the umpire is the way to go. It takes the umps attention off of the player, making it less likely that the ump will hear the player say something that will get him tossed.

If a high school player says anything to the ump that can be construed as arguing then he should be tossed - right or wrong doesn't matter. They play the game, umps offciate the game and coaches will coach the game. If there needs to be any discussion then the coach will handle it. If the player wants to chat up the ump or ask in a respectful manner about a rule interpretation then that's on the umpire but NEVER argue.

If a player does argue with an ump I'm going to tell them to shut up unless they are throwing a fit. Then they are going to sit for a little bit.
I am with coach. I tell my players never argue with the umpires. Never show any disrespect to the umpires. Never even show a hint of any of this to the umpires. Just play the game. It a situation arises where I feel something needs to be said I will do it. I will do it in a respectful manner. I have been tossed twice in my career and both times I wanted to be tossed so I asked for it and got it.
I'm coming at this from a college (summer ball) perspective where sometimes players do disagree with the imps and let them know. I agree with you all that 90 percent of the time it is probably wrong to argue with the ump, however it does happen. I found it interesting that the way my summer coach handles the situation (telling the player to leave the ump alone) has led to more player ejections than my school coach's strategy of going to talk to the umpires directly.
