Hi, we have been monitoring this site for a couple of years (great advice and wisdom!) and am posting my first question....

Has anyone attended the Head First Honor Roll camp? We chose this as the first college camp/showcase for our 2013 (just turned 15) to get his feet wet. Due to financial concerns, don't want to go crazy with the showcases this summer before soph year, and son has 4.00 GPA so seems like academics are a strength for him, along with baseball. He started at SS on varsity in an outstanding so cal CIFSS D1 league and hit .315 with nearly .500 OB%. Playing Amer. Legion summer ball June/July with his HS coach.

He was invited to play at the 16u JOs in AZ this month, but declined the invite due to conflict with school and expense.

Also considering the Pacific Coast Prospects camp in Long Beach during the Area Code games in August, if anyone has some feedback there.

2013 wants to play college ball, preferably at a D1 school -- has his list of 10 colleges he is considering. Guess I'm looking for some reinforcement that we're on the right track and any advice you can give would be MUCH appreciated.

HeadFirst was, by far, the best showcase rightyshortstop attended. That said, It's a little early, and expensive for a rising sophomore to attend that event. Coaches have their hands full at HeadFirst keeping track of recruitable kids much less sophomores. IMHO, I would send my son to a couple of college camps as a rising sophomore and save HeadFirst for next year. In this case its about money. HeadFirst is worth the money because all the important coaches are there and you actually save money by reducing the number of college visits you would have to take otherwise. Your son is so early in the process it might not be worth it.
Agree with lefty. Sounds like your guy is a great player. Now work even harder to become phenomenal. Summer of junior year is the biggie for showcasing. If, prior to that, coaches come calling, that's great -- you're in an area where he'll be seen. In the meantime I'd save the $$ for summer/fall team (play with the best available), tournaments, etc.
Great insights, Lefty & Krakatoa, thanks for the thoughts. I do realize it is early - your points are well taken. We registered early for the Headfirst camp, since it is close to several relatives and offers the chance to visit family. We're not expecting outcomes from this too much -- just practice in handling the situation for him.

Krakatoa, you are right that it seems he gets seen anyway -- several questionnaires have already arrived, even from D1 programs. 2013 has a phenomenal work ethic -- which has gotten him this far so far -- and truly enjoys working hard, which I guess a lot of teenagers don't. Within our means we try to reward that with the best opportunities we can find. Your recommendations are very helpful.

HS coach requires all players to play for him summer, fall and winter (unless playing other sports) - as well as spring season, but the occasional showcase is OK. With that in mind, as we project to summer 2011 (as he goes into Junior year) what showcases/camps would any of you recommend? We can start saving our money now! Wink
My son attended the headfirst honor roll camp last November and I can not say enough good things about Brendan Sullivan and his staff. If your son has the academic talent to go along with his baseball skills, attending a headfirst showcase should be your #1 priority. Although many players feel the need to play the entire summer circuit, if your son is serious about attending a top academic school, participating in a headfirst camp and than going to the interested school's individual camp is all that's needed to get signed. Unfortunately, my son would have had alot more opportunities if he had gone during the summer before his senior year started. If your son does that, he should have plenty of interested parties if he's good. He'll stand out more than at a huge general showcase. If you have to choose when to go, go early summer after he completes his junior year.
Just thought I would give you an update, now that my son has attended the Headfirst Honor Roll Camp. It was a terrific experience for my son -- beginning to end, well-run, top notch, outstanding showcase camp. Although my son was one of only two rising sophomores, he got plenty of chance to show the coaches what he can do and to talk with them one-on-one. As a family we agree that this was an outstanding choice for our son's first showcase. He has come away with great advice, great contacts and a clear idea of what his next steps need to be. I HIGHLY recommend this camp for the academically and athletically gifted student-athlete!
Ditto on the Rocklin Headfirst camp. Exceptionally well run, all the schools in attendance that were promised, and a solid experience for my son. Best of all, he's got some of the schools pursuing him now.

Thanks to everyone on HSBBW for the feedback on Headfirst. We would likely not have gone if not for the glowing comments posted here over the past couple of years.
