Situation: High school varsity game.
Runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, score 1-0 for the team at bat. Batter gets a hit into the outfield. Runner from second goes all the way home and just beats the throw, however he did not touch 3rd. Runner from 1st makes it to 3rd. The fielding team's coach approaches the home plate umpire and asks "you saw him miss 3rd didn't you?". Immediately the umpire said loudly, "the score is 1-0, 2 outs".

With my limited knowledge I thought there would need to be an appeal by a throw to 3rd. Please explain. Thanks.

High School rules allow a verbal appeal (the ball must be dead). No throw is necessary. The umpire's mechanics weren't the best, but at least he was watching R2's touch of 3rd base. Sounds like he got it right.
