hi, im a sophomore in hs and i pitch regularly. my question is, do any of you know any secrets to throwing a splitter/fork for a strike. when I throw it, i get a ton of swinging strikes, but every once in a while someone takes it and it tumbles just below the strike zone. i tried to throw it maybe a little slower and get ahead, but i have no control throwing it slower. thanks for your input.

The splitter, as I know it, is not meant to be a strike. It is not a 3-2 pitch. It is an 0-2 1-2 or 2-2 or 1-1 or 1-0 pitch where a swinging strike is great (when isn't it lol), but you can bear to give a ball. This isn't a pitch that you get called for 3rd strike looking; you get called for 3rd strike swinging.

Have you tried releasing the ball earlier?

By doing this it still gives your pitch the same amount of movement but it will travel higher allowing for your ball to land in the bottom of the zone rather than outside the zone.

Hope this helps you out

I never threw an illegal pitch. The trouble is, once in a while I toss one that ain't never been seen by this generation
What puzzles me is that you'd want to change. With the description that you give, it sounds like you've got at least a decent strikeout/waste pitch. Why change it? If you can get guys swinging on it, that's great, keep doing it. I wouldn't try to throw it slower, because more than likely with your age that will lead to some change of pace in your delivery pace/and/or arm speed. I'd just keep doing what you're doing. If you want another pitch to 'throw for a strike' work on a cutter or something.

NJ Pitch is exactly right
you dont want it to be a 3-0 pitch
you want it for a swinging strike
if your want to throw it for a strike do what i do. i just practiced throwing it till i could throw it for a strike routinely
i like to alternate between throwing a fastball and a splitter when i warm up, just to get the feel of the splitter
hope we can be of help
