In my son's conf. tourn. championship game, with a runner on 1st, the batter hit a ball into the gap in left center, between the outfielders. The batter rounded 1st and made 2nd, and the baserunner had rounded 3rd when things got interesting... the left fielder reached the ball first and glove flipped the ball to the center fielder (better arm, I guess). The problem was he flipped it over the outfield fence... oops! The umpires, with help from the coaches of course, ruled it a ground rule double, bringing the batter back to 2nd and the baserunner back to 3rd. Shouldn't the baserunner and the batter have been awarded home and third respectively?

Gman,

Just when you think you've seen everything, something like this happens. I think I'll leave it to the Umpiring experts on here to cypher this one.

My guess is (obviously without seeing it) that the flip should have been ruled the same as a throw. A throw from the outfielder that goes out of play is 2 bases if I remember correctly.

So in this case... IMO they got the call wrong!
Not sure what justification the umpires had to rule a ground rule double....Unless they did not see the flip...and just saw the ball over the fence

From the Post it seems as if it would have been a thrown ball and any award is TOT based on where the umpire judged where the runners were TOT.

Sounds like a mechanics breakdown on the part of the crew.....
