The HS rule makes it sounds like a kid has to catch the ball and hang on to it till his next birthday.
Our outfielder makes a great diving catch sliding on his belly; he jumps up to double up a runner and fumbles the ball (after sliding 8 ft. on his belly) ... umpire calls 'no catch' ... I'm not saying it was a bad call; but it was wrong; the ump was so influenced by the rule written that makes it sounds like the kid has to take the ball home and show it to grandma before we call it a catch...

I think you are blaming the rule for a poor application of it.

"The catch of a flyball by a fielder is not completed until the continuing action of the catch is completed."

Hardly requires waiting until bath day, much less a birthday.

Yes bad call.... but I think the way the rule is written makes an umpire wait longer than needed. If he had control of the ball while sliding on his belly the ball is caught; the man is out...
The way it is written has clouded the issue... that is my point. Yeah, it was a bad call; but he kicked the call because of the way the rule is written and on the test this year it said; the guy cathces the ball runs a few steps and the ball pops out of glove when he runs into the fence... no catch.'
