We relocated from Florida to Michigan about 9 months ago. My son is a freshman in high school, so really doesn't know much about the high school team. He played summmer and fall ball with teams that did not inlcude anyone from his school. My question is what process would you recommend he take before the season starts to somehow meet the coach and also be included in any conditioning they might have? He currently works 2-3 days a week with a excellent pitching coach, that we were lucky enough to find. I have been told he should somehow get his name out there before it all starts. Any advice would be much appreciated.Thank you!

Is the HS baseball coach also a teacher at the school? If so it would be as simple as going to his classroom after school and introducing himself. If the coach is not a teacher, I would suggest he go to the AD or the principal and ask how to contact him. At the same time you (the parent) can call the principal’s office and inquire about a booster club. Ask the names of current players’ parents and give them a call to see if the booster club (if one exist) has any activities during the off-season. Be sure to mention he's from Florida (the baseball state) Big Grin Big Grin
Don't wait. I don't know how it is there but I talked to one of the HS players a couple weekends ago and he said they were working out several hours a day (obviously not with the HS coach). I believe the freshman are also working out together during the week. We've got a few of the 14yo freshman playing fall ball on Sundays and making it to practice on Saturdays so I doubt they've got a freshman team playing right now, but I do believe they work out during the week. Have to ask the coach when I see him this weekend.
My 14yo is also a freshman in high school. We got lucky last year when we were buying our christmas tree and got it from the school in the area where we just moved to. The trees were being sold by the baseball team and the coach was there. He advised us of a baseball camp they put on in the winter break and we attended it.

He now has a legitamate shot at making the varsity team. He has played both summer and fall ball with the jv and varsity.

I am a coach in Michigan (Grand Blanc High School). We held a meeting a week ago concerning our winter workouts, which begin Dec. 1st. Our freshmen/JV hit only once a week, and pitchers throw only once a week (due to limited gym/cage time), but it helps them shake the rust off. Our varsity guys all go twice a week (hitters & pitchers) until tryouts in March.
This is a great way for the kids to get to know my coaching staff and to prepare for a championship season. Most coaches do SOME work in the winter in Michigan, since we can't get outside until early April if we're lucky. I'd simply have your son introduce himself to the coach...nothing says more to a coach than a kid who goes out of his way to get to know more about the program...tells the coach that the kid is ready to work.
