My catcher approached me today and wanted to know if he could use the skull cap and mask combo behind the plate as opposed to the hockey style mask. I do not know the answer to this question. We are in Pennsylvania. I used one in Texas while i was in high school, I graduated in 2003. Our coach left it up to the players. Anyone have any help with this? Thanks in advance.

If Pennsylvania plays under NFHS rules (which I think they do - not 100% sure though) then they have to stick with the one piece unit (hockey mask). The two piece is not allowed mainly because it doesn't cover the ear.

I believe Texas doesn't play under NFHS rules (once again not 100% sure) so catchers there can use the two piece.
The applicable NFHS Rules are 1-5-3 and 1-5-4, regarding catchers. If your state follows NFHS, then the rule does apply...

In a nutshell:

The catcher must wear a head protector, shin guards, body protector, protective cup and a mask with a throat protector. The throat protector, which is either part of or attached to the mask, must adequately protect him. The helmet must have full ear protection (dual ear flaps).

The catchers helmet must bear the NOCSAE seal of approval. A skull cap helmet-mask combination is ILLEGAL because it has no protection for the ears.

So here's how the waiver works in Texas. If the cap and mask, BOTH, have the NOCSAE seal, then the equipment can be used. GUN wears one, as it has been approved and verified. However, some umpires will not allow it, even though the equipment has been authorized. When that happens, they switch it out, no big deal. But he really prefers the two-piece combo, as it is much lighter and more comfortable.

As far as summer ball, it's never been an issue.
