Which is more important success on your varsity team or picking the so called right summer travel team

For me they sort of dovetail---if you have success with the HS team the better summer/fall teams will be inviting you to play for them
My son had a great varsity season and does play with one of the better summer teams. It is just that I hear conflicting info. Some people say it is more important to play on a good summer team that is where he will get noticed by colleges. They claim high school baseball is useless. Yet there were college scouts at some of our high school games. Somehow I feel like I am not doing what I should be doing to help him try to play baseball in college. Thank you for your input.
