I have one for all of you. At High School Tryouts a Freshman comes out not dressed the first day of tryouts. Everyone is asking why. Word gets out he is ineligible due to grades from his 8th grade year? The next day of tryouts he is dressed out? Coach tells the kids it was a mistake? Dad signs some paperwork and now he is on the team. What does that show the other kids who are busting their butts for grades? If you sign a paper everything goes away? Is it really worth it? Would love to have a coach come on and tell me it is. What is the bigger picture here?

NEIA.... not enough information available.

It's now Spring of the young man's frosh year. Why would 8th Grade performance have anything to do with his eligibility? Seems to me, they would be looking more at how he did this past Fall as a frosh in HS. Further solidifies that "what's going on, is rumor..." and perhaps some jealousy by a kid(s) who may not be as good on the field.

With all due respect...

I believe in Florida (not certain) that your 8th grade grades can make you ineldgible initially, but because it is 8th grade you can be allowed to play with a parent waiver. in other words, by rule you are inelgible...but because it is 8th grade, they allow the parent to make the decision.
I do not know the exact requirements for Florida so I could be wrong here. I played HS in WV and coached in KY and NC and all the grade requirements are fairly similar so I'm going to make this assumption.

Baseball is a spring sport so his grades from 8th grade will not matter. If he bombed the first semester then he would be ineligible. If he bombs the spring semester then he will be ineligible for fall sports during his 2nd year (don't want to call him a sophomore if he isn't).

Who knows why the kid didn't dress out - he could have been sick, forgot his stuff, not had a physical completed (coaches cannot let a kid participate if they do not have a physical in their hand), whatever. My guess is the physical since the father had to sign something but once again we don't know.

Take care of your own and don't worry about the rumor mill. Your son is now in HS and it is full of rumors and jealousy and misinformation. You will sleep better at night if you're not worrying about what is going on with everyone else.

You can't have the full story. The state makes eligibility rules. He's eligible or he isn't. Our high school has it's own eligibility guidelines. This kid could have been told on day one he didn't meet the school's requirements. Then, found out day two his makeup work made him eligible.
