when's the best time to start making a highlight tape?

Never. Not to be too blunt but as a Coach, the last thing i want to see is hours of your sons "highlights". A film should be short, sweet, and to the point. I don't need to see him trotting around the bases after going deep off of a 64 MPH fastball. What I do need to see is the fundamentals of his swing, and that takes me about 3 minutes.
Yep ... My daughter's was three swings, three fielding plays (going back, and laterally each way), three throws, one each of running home to first and first to third with her times printed in the screen. There was a voice over (her voice) of why she wanted to attend the college and be part of the program. I think it was two minutes total. Then her travel schedule ran at the end. Bingo. I don't need to hear music, I don't need to see your stats (God only knows what type of pitcher you hit those 6 homeruns off of), and I sure as heck don't want to hear your parents shaking and screaming in a video during the game. 2 minutes, and if I need more then I'll see it live........

First, make varsity and perform. Second, there's no need to send video of your freshman year unless you're physically mature. In my son's case it would be silly to send video of a 5'11", 145 pound freshman when he'll probably be 6'2", 175 in a couple of years.
Exactly. Right now, you have far more to worry about then making films. Keep working hard, getting bigger, stronger, faster, and get on the field.
There will be plenty of time for film after your Sophomore year...unless you are a player ala Bryce Harper as a frosh. If that's the case...people will make your videos for you...
