So recently, I've described the hips as the bottom of the top, rather than the top of the bottom. Now since I'm sure some of you are wondering "what the !@$*" does he mean by this, I'll tell you. In the high-level swing, I am convinced that the hip is not the driver. Why?

Because when you coil your hip, and then uncoil it, there's no benefit. You might as well have not coiled at all! Now, if you do this, you'll UNload to swing, rather than load as you swing. UNloading as the swing is bad. Loading as the swing is good.

So what is the driver? The LEG is the driver! Why? Because if I've coiled, I need to move that coiled hip. How can I do that? By using my leg. For the purposes of the post, the leg is everything from the knee down. So if I drive with my leg, my hip stays coiled. If I drive with my leg, I can use my resistance, rather than bleeding it off.

The leg must win. The hips CANNOT turn themselves.

A wise choice. Williams' excellent book is still the best, most authoritative analysis on the subject.

I agree, up to a point. I think Williams' biggest flaw was that he wasn't explicit on how to do things. For example "c o c k the hips" really isn't that explanatory.

I am a little confused. After reading this thread I pulled out my Science of Hitting book and discovered that on Page 42 there is a picture and an explanation on hip cocking and when it should take place and then from page 45-47 he continues to talk about hip cocking and why it is essential. Based on this can you tell me how you believe it is not explanatory?

He never gets into how the knee **** leads to an action in the rear hip socket. This leads to most (not implying yourself) believing that all that needs to be done to **** the hips is turn the knee in. Not true in the least.

I found the book easy to read and understand.
