A batter hits a hard grounder into centerfield.  As the batter nears first base, the ball rolls under the centerfielder’s glove and rolls to to the wall, enabling the runner to reach third.

It should have been a routine play for the centerfielder but the batter would have reached first safely even if the fielder had not missed the ball.

Is this a hit or an error?  If it is a hit, is is scored as a single or a triple?

thanks for your comments.

Variation on a theme.

My 2017 son's final at-bat in HS baseball. Bases loaded, 2 outs, down by a LOT. Hits an absolute bullet low LD that just missed the pitcher enroute to center/right-center. Had not rained much so OF hard and grass very dry. Probably hits the ground 30-40' past IF and bounces/rolls another 150'. maybe traveling 320' total. The CF seems to lose it for a second, drops back, and then charges, having no chance at the ball that rockets past him by a good 10' and rolls another 50+ feet. All 3 runs score and son standing-up at 2b pretty easily. Nice way to end the HS career, even if they  lost 11-4.

Double, single, reached 2nd on error? 1, 2, or 3 RBI?

Up to the scorekeeper but probably single, 2 RBIs. 3rd run scored on error. Let say the CF fielded it cleanly, he would have tried to throw the runner (who started on 2B) out at the plate or at least hit the cut thus preventing the batter from advancing to second on the throw.  And let's just say there was a play at the plate and batter reaches 2B.  That's still a single with the batter advancing on the throw.  In either case the runner who started on 1st does NOT reach home.  Which is why when he scored it was because of the error...
