The HS where I coach hosted a playoff basketball game tonight.  The visiting team featured a 6'9" senior C by the name of Dave Winfield Jr.  Pop was in the stands joining in on the spirit cheers like any good dad would.  Dave Jr is definitely his father's son and you could just tell by his demeanor that he is a great kid - headed to an Ivy to play basketball.  Many of our students approached Dave Sr. during halftime and he was very gracious and accomodating.  Very cool.  Dave Jr's team was not as kind to our home team

Dave Winfield spoke at my sons college fundraiser last year. What a great guy. He is a sincere family man and was vey inspirational. I think he even donated most of his speaking fee back to our bb program. He really seemed like a classy person that loves his family and his time in bb.

This year the featured speaker was Bill Buckner. That was an interesting talk! Also a great guy and family man.

After college (back in the dark ages!) I played on an amatuer team with Dave's brother Steve for several years.  The Winfield's are one of the most humble families you could ever meet.  Funny story occured while Dave was playing for San Diego.  The Padres were hosting the All Star game and Dave invited his mother, Arlene, out to San Diego for the All Star game and festivities.  Arlene was at all of our games and we'd frequently get together as a team after the game and have a beer in the parking lot.  Well after the All Star game Arlene showed up at our next game.  Afterwards I asked her if she had a good time.  Her eyes got very big and she became really animated.  At that point she grabbed my arm and said, "oh it was so much fun.....I got to meet Ricky Henderson!!".  I was flabbergasted and said "Arlene, what's the big deal about meeting Ricky, your son is Dave Winfield!".  She was quite possibly the nicest person I ever met.  She raised Dave and Steve alone and continued to work in the St. Paul, MN school system as a server in a lunch room while Dave was a MLB player.
