Just wanted to throw out some good words about the Valley League in Virginia.  My son is playing out there this summer and having a great time.  It's a beautiful area, the towns are small and the fields harken back to an easier time in the past where the town's folks find great entertainment in watching these young men play.

HSBBW's own, hokieone, lives there and runs one of the teams, the Strasburg Express.  He was instrumental in finding my son a roster spot and we are forever grateful.  I had the pleasure of meeting him last week.  Great guy.

If you've never been, a trip to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia is recommended.

I have not visited that part of the country in many moons, but will be next month and I'm looking forward to it.

Non-baseball question: Any favorite battlefield monuments around there?  I'm hoping to visit Gettysburg with my son as well but if we get a chance we might visit Manassas or....?

Spent three weeks in DC last summer. Son played A ball in Hagerstown, daughter lives in DC.Son moved three times back and forth in 2 weeks to New York, and back to Hagerstown so we saw the countryside. I loved DC. Got to almost all the museums and much more. Had wanted to go my entire life.

I want to go back and do the Civil war,a and Amish country, and some areas in Virginia.Love the East Coast.

The Battlefields

McDowell (VA102)
New Market (VA110)
Piedmont (VA111)
Port Republic (VA106)
Rutherford’s Farm (VA115)
Tom’s Brook (VA121)
Waynesboro (VA125)
Winchester I (VA104)
Winchester II (VA107)
Winchester III (Opequon) (VA119)

I know this is off topic, but you asked!  Above is a list of Civil War battlefields around the Shenandoah Valley area.  Many are known as part of the "Valley Campaign".

A movie "Field of Lost Shoes" (2014) is about the cadets of Virginia Military Institute that walked from Lexington to north of Staunton, Va to the battle of New Market.  (An older film of the same title is at the New Market visitor's center which inspired the movie.)   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2477218/

There is an excellent, small, museum on the campus of VMI.   Some cadets recreated the march this past spring.  http://www.timesdispatch.com/s...a3-d89cf1147d05.html

One of the better Virginia battlefield sites is in Manassas, VA or the Battle of Bull Run (there were 2 battles there).  The residents in DC actually dressed up and traveled to attend the first battle as if they were attending a sporting event.

If you go to Gettysburg, one of the best things we did was hire a docent that actually gets in your car and drives you around and tells you about the battles, and/or the things you are interested in.  The battle there was a 3-day long affair and the site is rather large, so having someone give you a 3 1/2 hour tour was well worth the $40-50 bucks we paid him (especially since my boys were 11 and 13 at the time).  They have a newer visitor's center and museum since I was there which I understand is very nice.

If you need more info, please PM me.  My great grandfather fought at the Battle of Cedar Creek and my dad had quite a library on the subject, which is now shelved just to my left.

LOL -- I knew when I posted that that more than likely there would be somebody with a whole library of Civil War info who would reply.  I have visited Gettysburg and it's an amazing experience.  I have also been to Manassas a couple times, but that was long ago.  I might revisit that with my boy, but first I'll look at your list and see what looks interesting and what of those might make more sense in terms of our itinerary.

Thanks!

Thanks!  Great list.

I know it is not in that area, but if you tack on a trip to the DC (as fanofthegame mentioned) be sure to spend time at Arlington National.  Take your time to soak it all in, and be sure to see the Changing of the Guard. Very moving.

We just did that in May, the weekend of my daughter's graduation from Georgetown. (And, I had a chance to visit the site of my cousin's grave for the 1st time since her funeral many years ago.) Now that my daughter has moved to Arlington, I am sure we'll get there again.

  Great thread.

I grew up in Winchester and hosted a number of Winchester Royals. Lots of history around the area, and easy to find.  Then you can catch a Valley League game in the evening which is great stuff.  Make sure if your in Winchester to check out Handley High School and the Handley Library.  My favorite Royals memory was watching them hit 6 home runs in a row.  Number 7 grounded out but number 8 went yard as well. Close seconds were watching the kid that played all 9 positions in one game and watching Jimmy Key pitch

- great fun!

Just saw this thread and appreciate the kind words. We do have internet service, telephones, and even indoor toilets. For those in areas lacking internet service, the Virgin Mobile Hot Spot is excellent-buy it for around $80, then pay by the month but only for the months desired. For our press box, we use a hot spot and only pay for internet service during our season. It handles all of our computer internet usage-score-keeping, internet audio broadcasts, etc.

The Valley League is a wonderful place to spend a summer and has been well-described above. Exposure to pro scouts happens but even if a player doesn't get to the MLB, the experience is wonderful. We appreciate our gorgeous surroundings more when players and their families come in and rave about the natural beauty that we see daily and probably take for granted...

"Somebody"'s son, no HSBBW name mentioned, but the player's name is Mason Snyder, playing for Woodstock, absolutely drilled a home run against us last night, starting a rally that turned our comfortable 3-0 lead into a 7-3 loss.  Dale Jarrett's son Zach also plays for Woodstock and also had a couple hits as poppa Dale watched from the stands, looking and acting just like any other baseball dad...although the NASCAR fans are always abuzz when he visits.   It's nice to see that he gets to act like any other fan-my wife sat behind him the whole game but didn't know who he was until somebody told her in the 8th inning.
