I was talking with a Juco Coach at a tournament and the topic of speed came up about a hitter who happened to be at the plate. He was very fast but had not hit a lick for the tournament. The coach's comment about the kid was "he can't steal first base".

I almost forgot..the reason the home to first times are usually not available as you take them in live hitting situations and most people/coaches watch the hit and forget to start the watch.

njbb you are right. 4 sec would be a GREAT time. But theoretically if he is running a 4.9 40 that is 8.16 yards per second and at 30 yards to first he could be doing it in about 3.6 seconds. Add dropping the bat and getting out of the box he could make it in 4. Smile

Former Pirate Jason Kendall could run to first in 4 sec. when he was a rookie. And he is a catcher. Just giving TimeToStepUp something to go on.

JPS,

You do understand?
That no human that ever lived can run the first 8.16 yards in one second... don't you?

World class sprinters don't even reach top speed in 90 feet.

If you took a 10 second 100 meters it would average 10 meters a second. That would mean they could run home to first in about 2.7 seconds... based on the feet per second average.

The first 10 yards are always "much" slower than each 10 yards in the remaining distance... In every case! The last 10 yards would be the fastest in all sprints under 100 meters.
