Eureka, Illinois is a short drive from me and they even play in my conference. One thing is for sure, you will not be discovered playing at Eureka high school. The only way to get recruited from that area, same as me, is to be proactive and seek out schools and get in front of college coaches via showcases, etc.
Ben probably knew little of this process, but lucked out that he got the good advice to showcase in Peoria.

Jeff Francis (Rockies)another example of a late bloomer. He couldn't get a scholarship either. His 13 million a year makes up for any pain he might have suffered.
