The Ballpark Academy has announced times and dates for their winter camps. They have put together a great roster of instructors for these camps. Scheduled to instruct are:

Pirates pitcher and 1st Rd pick Kip Wells (Elkins HS, Baylor)
1st Rd pick James Loney (Elkins HS)
1st Rd pick Clint Everts (Cy Falls HS)
14th Rd pick Kelly Shearer (Elkins HS)
Reds scout Tyler Wilt

There are other professional players that are checking their schedules and may work the camps as well. A full roster of coaches will be listed when it becomes available.

Session 1, December 21-22: Ages 5-7, Fundamentals of Hitting & Fielding

Session 2, December 21-22: Ages 8-10, Advanced Hitting

Session 3, December 21-22: Ages 11+, Advanced Hitting

Session 4, December 29-30: Ages 11+: Advanced Pitching & Catching

Me too, Kevin's a regular on the Houston boards. I've never met the guy, but from what I gather very passionate about baseball, and especially the Elkins Knights. I guess there could be worse things than rooting for a 3 time state champ. Wink Big Grin

I'd like to attend just to check it out. If it's anything like my son's first grade class.... it should be interesting to say the least.
You'd be surprised how many parents do send 5 year olds to camps.

Over Spring Break, Ballpark Academy held a camp and there were so many 5 year olds, a complete group was made only of them.

As you can imagine, very very basic work. Basically just showing them the "squish the bug" technique and how to not let the ball hit you in the face when you try to catch it, but we make it pretty fun for them.

I agree - I am as crazed a baseball parent as anyone but on Dec 21-22 a 5-7 year old should be on the lake crappie fishing - not at a baseball camp!!

My 16 year old will probably be at a baseball camp but me and my 7 year old will be on the lake (unless it is below 35 degrees!).

Some parents don't know what they are missing!
Kevin, I hope your kidding about the instructors as well. A player does not mean he is a good instructor. SO I wouldn't send my kid to that camp. However, I would send them to the Professional Baseball Camp at 2nd Baptist High School. Great camp and great instruction. All the instructors are professional coaches and professional scouts who have been coaches. But, its only for high school aged kids

I've personally watched Loney and Shearer give lessons and both are very skilled at teaching their craft. I have not seen Wells give a lesson, but Coach Carpenter from Elkins vouched for him and that is plenty good enough for me. Again, I have not seen Everts give a lesson but I have made more than a few phone calls in regards to his ability to teach before we asked him to come on board. Mr Wilt was a college coach and again, I have seen him work with players and I have absolutely no problem telling parents that he is a qualified instructor for the camp.

You of course are free to send your player to any camp you see fit, but to knock the players ability to teach baseball without having seen them do so is not fair to them. I either have seen or have talked to trusted people that have seen these players work at camps and I would not hire them or recommend them for hiring if I personally did not feel they were fit to teach young players.
Kevin, I have watched the players in question work. They are players and NOT instructors.

The BEST camp (in TEXAS) for HIGH SCHOOL aged kids is THE PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL ACADEMY at 2nd Baptist high school field on Saturdays and Sundays. Go check it out. The camp wil run from now until Dec. 10. The camp produced a 1st ROUND DRAFT PICK last season and will have many others sign college scholorships. The staff consist of coaches who have been in the game for many years. It's OUTSTANDING.
