Chris hit .611 w/ four doubles, two triples, three homers & 10 RBI for the weekend. Chris leads the CAA w/ 14 HR & 52 RBI, quite a year!

Congrats to Chris, job well done.

Congratulations to Freshman Infielder Greg Sexton, W&M, for being Named The CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after batting .444 in the Tribe's series win over UNC Wilmington. He leads the NCAA In Doubles Per Game At A .59 Clip

Also to Andy Watts, Hampden-Sydney,for his first collegiate victory, over Emory&Henry, pitching nine. He allowed only 3 runs on 10 hits, with one walk, while fanning 9. He also helped himself out at the plate with a two run homer.

PS. valefty44,
good luck to Scott this weekend at GMU
maybe we will see you there Sat.?
former kellam high shortstop ryan zimmerman has been invited to try out for team usa in durham, nc in june this summer ! what a great honor for ryan and his family ! ryan and his teammates @ uva are enjoying probably the the greatest season in school history. not to put the "gowdy" on them, but they are in a great position to host a first round regional tourney.
All current H.S. baseball players that are serious about their performance at the next level, please listen up.

The ex-H.S. standouts you read about on this site and in the local papers that are making an immediate impact with their respective college programs have two things in common, and neither of them is what H.S. program they came from.

1. Each of these players believes in and maintains an aggressive work ethic. They did not just arrive at this level of play from the often-used term “natural ability”. Instead they developed their strengths in graduated steps over many years of hard work and competition. In other words, they EARNED and continue to EARN their abilities and are not afraid of any failures incurred along the way.

2. Each of these players believes in and maintains personal accountability. They do not make or look for excuses in their shortcomings. They seek answers and assume responsibility to diminish their limitations in order to regain their competitive edge.

Quality coaches see these traits in a ballplayer and will not hesitate to place them in the spotlight, where they will shine and begin to help the team shine as well. In the meantime, the players that never seem to get it are too busy trying to blame someone or something for their lack of performance, or their not playing.

So, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself if you truly have a work ethic and assume personal responsibility. Because if you have been spending more of your time putting on a grand facade instead of working the fundamentals, you may be somewhat surprised in your inaugural year of college at why you have not become the impact player you, or others, thought you would be.
Phil Lawhorn, Salem (Va Beach) '03 grad, picked up the Win for Pensacola Junior College in the first game of the Florida Junior College playoffs; held in Kissimee Fl, against #1 ranked (State) & #16 (Nationally) Indian River CC . Phillip entered the 8th with PJC trailing 4-2 and runners at 2nd & 3rd. Struck-out the first batter faced and induced the next hitter to hit what appeared to be an inning ending flyout to left; the Left-Fielder dropped the ball and both runners scored. Next battered grounded out to end the inning with the score 6-2. PJC scored 8 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 10-6 lead. Phillip struck out the first two batters he faced and the last batter flew-out to left to end the game. Good velocity on FB and hard-break on slider kept hitters off-balance. Says he threw his Change-up the best he ever has. His record improved to 6-4 with 7 saves and ERA hovering around a buck/twenty-five. Missed a chance to play against another Beach stand-out, Kyle Dubois Cox '02. Kyle's team Mantatee #3(State) were upset by Lake City CC 4-2. PJC will meet LCCC tomorrow.
Phil Lawhorn '03 Salem (Va Beach) named Panhandle All Conference 2nd Team-Closer.
PJC wins today vs Lake City 11-1 (5 innings). Phillip's roomate (Frosh-Logan Williamson) picked up the complete game W. PJC plays winner of tonights St. Peterburgs/Central Florida in the final game of the winners bracket. Winner would have to get beat twice for the Florida State JUCO Championship and a trip to the JUCO World Series in Colorado.

Former Cox stand-out (two-time Cubs draft pick) Kyle Dubois is scheduled to pitch for Manatee in tomorrows game against loser of tonights game. Kyle is having a great year at 7-1(last time I checked).

Note: Friday nights Pitcher for FSU vs UVA, Rhett James, played JUCO ball for PJC.
Just an update on a local 02 Princess Anne H.S. graduate, Michael Cardwell. Mike's team, the CCBC Catonville Cardinals, Baltimore, MD won their second consecutive Maryland JUCO Confernece crown with a 24-6 conference record (29-14 overall)during the 2004 season. The Cardinals finish their season by winning their last 15 games to take the crown.

Mike ended his regular season career at CCBC with a .323 BA, 27R and 24 RBI's.

The Cardinals will play this week to see if they can earn a repeat visit to the DII World Series.

(St. Petersburg eliminated).
Championship game today at noon PJC vs Central Florida. Central Florida will have to win twice in order to advance to the JUCO World Series.
Note: No player from PJC named to First or Second Team All State. Hmmmmm.
PJC WINS STATES, applaude
PJC defeated Central Florida 2-1 behind the strong pitching performance of Freshman Logan Williamson.
Phillip was sent to the pen in the 7th, but Williamson (his roomate) never shown any signs of tiring. PJC lost the first game 4-1.

This was PJC's first State Title, Coach Hamilton Picked up his 500th win on Saturday.
PJC will be in Colorado May 29th-Jun 5th, for the JUCO D1 World Series.
So, Phillip will not be coming home this week. Frown
OUTSTANDING! Congratulations. WS at any level is a BIG DEAL!

Be ready for some competition out in Colorado. As you know Mike's team went to the DII WS last year and it was a lot of fun going there. Make sure you can go. Don't miss an opportunity due to work. It is so hard to get there, they may never get another chance.

Phillip has added a lot to that team to make their season successfull.

Fieldbuilder,
Where is the DII World Series going to be held?

Unfortunately, I will not be able to go to Grand Junction, Colorado. My younger boy will be playing in the Virginia AAU 12-U tournament starting that weekend and finishing up the next; we are hosting so I'll have to work. The Tournament will be held at City View Park on Kempsvill Rd.

Ironically, Phillip will be returning that weekend on the 6th/7th then leaving with us on the 10th for Orlando; the younger ones team is one of three teams representing the US in an International Invitational Tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports. Should be fun.

I can't help it I have to brag.

Chris Rahl from The College of William & Mary has been selected as 1 of 30 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Award. Chris is one of only 7 sophmores named. Chris is currently hitting .391 with 20 hr, 70 rbi, 68 runs scored, and 35 stolen bases.

His mother and I are extremly proud of him and are happy to see that hard work and perserverance pay off.
A quick note because I'm off to Baltimore to see Mike play. Congratulations to Chris Rahl. This kid has done an outstanding job. Can he get better? WOW! VaDad, say hi to the Roenker kid, one of Mike's HS teammates.

LAWMAN,

The DII WS is in Millington, TN. just outside Memphis at the former Team USA facility. Nice venue. Memphis is a fun place. Near some old stomping grounds for me. If you look up USA Stadium on a web search, you should be able to find it. They have many BB events there including DII JUCO, big HS tournaments and the beginning season touraments for DI 4-year schools like Arkansas, etc.

Have a great weekend.
VaDad
That a boy, beat on that chest.

For those who don't know. The Dick Howser tropher is given to the TOP Player!!! in collegiate baseball. Just to be chosen as 1 of 30 semifinalist is worth bragging about.

congrats to Chris - impressive stats you have plated against very tough competition.

O and by the way, it's not all about hitting, you have to have the academics numbers to match those stats!

Lawman,

We arrived home last night at 9:30 p.m. from Baltimore. Mike's Catonville Cardinals won the Maryland XX Regional going 4-0. They beat a very good Frederic CC 4-3. The Cards had to come from behind in the ninth inning to avoid a second deciding game.

Mike was voted on the all region all star team along with 4 other Catonsville players including Mike's roommate. Mike ended with a 6/14 offensive effort.

Next, they play Lenior CC out of NC in Catonsville, MD this Friday for the champion of Districts 1 & 2 to see who goes to the WS.
VaDad, SportsMom03 & Mitch23,
Thanks for notes on Scott. His mother deserves all the credit though.

mitch23 - I'll be keeping an eye out for Mike. What a year the Cavs are having! With local guys Mike, Zim, Reynolds (but he's got a good chance in the draft) & Ballard back next year the future looks bright for the Hoos. If you talk to Ryan wish him my best on the Team USA tryout. It looks as if you guys may be hosting a regional this year. Congrats again on a great season & keep telling them local boys to keep it up.

VaDad - I gotta agree w/ you. Nobody wants to play ODU in that first round. They are playing really well at the right time of year. Coach Guzzo should be commended. It could have been easy for them to have folded the tents on this season. A class guy w/ a classy program.
