I recently had a ball player ask me:

"I want to play at the next level. How do I get an edge over my competition?"

My opinion:

Out-work them. This doesn't necessarily mean more time spent. Work hard and smart. Quality over quantity. Work just past the edge of your current ability level. Never "go through the motions," but instead practice with a purpose always, paying attention to minute details. Figure out how to get motivated so that you learn to actually enjoy the discomfort that comes from pushing yourself just beyond your current ability level. This will allow you to learn fast every time you work hard. It's not your genetics or your current skill level that will determine how high you go. It's your ability to meet difficult challenges like these head-on and consistently grow. Remember: change is inevitable, but growth is optional. The most important factor, by far, is the rate of your learning between now and when you retire.

Very well said. I think, also, kids need to accurately define "next level" for themselves. Does that mean JUCO, draft, D-I, etc.? Have a clear-cut goal of where you want to be & shoot for it. Most importantly, once a certain goal is achieved, re-adjust the goal by raising the bar (or you'll get complacent, not improve, and lose your contract...but I digress). Basically, DO NOT LIMIT OPTIONS. Figure out what is important for you, personally (not Daddy's or Mommy's expectations), and get after it like Coach T points out.
