txproudmom,

If your son is a serious pick, the Advisors will be calling soon. You can also do a search on this site for messages containing "Advisor". Under the "find" tab, key in advisor, and press "GO". If you want to streamline your query, press the "advanced search" button and fill in the relevant keywords.

If all fails drop me a PM and I may be able to help

That's always good news to hear. But I have some questions? What do you mean by A lot of interest? Is he in HS or college? What position does he play?

If they are calling you and not the coach of his HS team. If they have talked directly to you and your son in your home, asking about what plans he already has for after HS. If you have been asked to provide a medical history? ETC

There are plenty of "advisors" here that can help to a point. Provide a little more detail and we can provide more direction.

When my son was drafted there was interest/contact from about 23 of the 30 teams. There was no need for an advisor at that point for us.

There are several articals on this site to read like this one..http://www.hsbaseballweb.com/pro-scouting/agents_vs_advisors.htm

If you choose not to discuss any more detail but still need help you can PM TRhit or any of the posters here that have has their son drafted. Three resources in TX I know about are OnePlayersPop and infielddad for a lady's perspective maybe southpawmom.

It can be very exciting and over welming but to be perfectly honest you most likely will not need an advisor unless the above happens. If your son has the potental to be a top 7 round draft pick then believe me you will have Advisor/Agents coming out of the woodwork contacting you.

And just a word of caution do not sign anything without understanding what it is.

I hope I have given you some direction to help and GL to you and your son.
He is in HS. Has actually signed with Howard JC- after some D1 offers, decided to go JC for several reasons (full ride, flexibility, in state). He is a pitcher (also SS) and is averaging 92mph. We have filled out medical history emails from the various scouts and this week had 2 tell us he needed to go in the draft. My thought with the advisor was to learn more about the pros/cons of going out of HS, what to watch out for, be aware of etc...I will follow up on the info you all have provided in your replies and I am sure that will help. It is all happening very quickly and I want to be prepared and informed. Thanks!
Txproudmom,

Did your son pitch in the WWBA Championship last fall (Jupiter)?

If he is who I think he is, your son is very talented. The head coach at Howard actually works for us in the summer. That is a very good option your son has.

Anyway, there are lots of agent/advisors in Texas, but if you have a decent relationship with them, I would contact the coaches your son played for in Jupiter. If you want more information, feel free to contact us. At any rate, best of luck.

I strongly urge you to follow PG's advice, contact the coaches who best know your son or him.
We as parents who have been through the process can give general advice, but each players situation is unique, so therefore it is important to talk this over with someone who knows him well adn you trust.

My son had huge interest in HS but IMO in the end the need for an advisor was not necessary, mostly because we knew the pros/cons and discussed it with him and he really wanted to go to college.
The only thing I might add is to be careful concerning allowing the advisor to talk to any MLB teams on your son's behalf. The NCAA seems to be very curious concerning this since they lost in court with a player from the mid-west. If you are headed towards JUCO this is not an imediate issue. Only if you end up going to a NCAA school could this become an issue. I believe more recently this became an issue for a player at U of Kentucky?

Good luck!!

He can sign with a JuCo and a D1 school as well as get drafted. Only if he attends the 4yr d1 school can he not be drafted until his Jr Yr.

As far as the advisor goes, think about it.

If I had to do it again I wouldn't have had an advisor during the draft. I knew what the slot money was, I knew what to expect from the teams, and that's what I got. You can always have one on the back burner in case something fishy comes up during the draft or if they are trying to low ball you after he's been drafted.

If you are set on having one I suggest looking for one who seems energetic and can make things happen. You want a guy who is going to believe in your son's ability and not one hoping he makes it to the big leagues so he can make money. Someone who you all will get along with and you feel comfortable asking questions to.

Please tell your son congratulations and keep up the great work!
