My son is doing a fair number of high profile events this summer both on his own and with his Club Team, including:

  • PG/WWBA 18u National Championship in Lake Point Georgia, from June 27 -- July 4th
  • Bay Area World Series, July 18 - 20th, Santa Clara, California.
  • Perfect Game,  No. Cal.  Top Prospect Show Case,  Oakland CA,  July 26-27.
  • Team One Under Armour 18U Southwest Championship, July 31- August 4, LA
  • Triple Crown Fall Nationals,  Las Vegas, NV Sept 5-7
We also intend to  attend some prospect camps -- all here  in California, at the moment.   What we're wondering is whether this list of events, together with the in State prospect camps,  will suffice to give him national exposure.  The kid is willing to go anywhere in the country, he says, to keep playing.   There are obviously lots of out of state prospect camps he could attend.  But chasing  down too many of those things is more than we have time  or money for.  Our strategy with far away schools has been to send them his schedule, link to an online profile,  fill out their prospect questionnaire, etc.  But we haven't signed up for any far away prospect camps.  Does our  approach seem adequate?  I am thinking that since a fair number of his events are high profile and/or heavily scouted, he can get serious national attention if he does well at them, without our having to travel to Florida, say, to play in front of coaches there.  Am I right?

Travel where the college coaches on his vetted list will be.  By vetted, I mean that meaningful third parties (e.g., scouts, counselors, et.al.) have made educated "guesses"  that your son could be admitted to a school and could make that school's baseball roster.

Taking a scattershot approach to college baseball will take a lot of time and money and may not put a player in front of the "right" coaches/schools.  And the college level is really first and foremost about school.  The baseball can be gone at any time.

If your goal and talent level is appropriate for national level teams, I think you got it covered.

Your son may want to verify that his target schools will be in attendance or that they have a need at your son's position.   With that much travel and $$, I'd want to make sure (or at least understand cost/reward).   JMO.  Good luck.

Our approach to prospect or frankly any camps so far has been to only attend those that either my son or his travel coach has had some voice to voice interest expressed by the coaching staff after they have seen him pitch in a game.

Unless you are a truly elite level player my thinking is that showing up cold at a prospect camp a time zone away is not likely to be very fruitful.

In our case living literally as far west as you can get in the US any trip is a long one. decided that the most "bang for the buck" is a 2 week trip to California for headfirst and Stanford camps in June. 11 of the 17 schools my son is interested in will be there, if things work out then a east coast trip will be in our future to go to school specific camps.

price of living in paradise i suppose.

I would try to get a Area Code tryout invite, costs nothing.

I would consider swapping:

Team One Under Armour 18U Southwest Championship, July 31- August 4, LA

Triple Crown Fall Nationals,  Las Vegas, NV Sept 5-7

With Arizona Fall Classic, and PG National Championships in Ariz.

Never been a big fan of Under Armour and don't know about the Triple Crown event.

Nate Trosky does bay area events that you should check out, he is a class act.

Why not a fan of Under Armour?  Never done one of their events -- so I don't have a view.

The Under Armour and Triple Crown events are  coach's choices for the kids "local" travel team -- this a team he plays in to keep him fresh, get him  reps, not really a showcase type team -- though they try to end the summer with a showcase type event -- thus the Under Armour event.    They mostly play locally. For the PG/WWBA he is playing with a scout team.   Will do some Trosky events - college game days, etc -- as well perhaps. But he is trying to leave room for college specific prospect camps of a few targeted places.  BUSY summer.

Sluggerdad,

Your initial question was if your list would provide adequate national exposure.  BOF's replacement suggestions are dead on if that is the objective.  I think you would get far more of the desired eyeballs at those events.

okay. Let's see  we can do about that. (The coach of the local travel team is a good baseball guy, but not  much experience getting guys to the big stage.  Not sure if it's too late for this team to get an invitation to the PG National Championship.  But I will suggest it to him  -- tell him guys in the know says he would showcase his players there much, much better.)

So is Team One/Under Armour really a sort of second fiddle organization to PG in terms of getting guys noticed?  That seems to be one implication I am picking up.  Or am I reading that wrong?
