How much marketing do you need to do?

Just was wondering how much is one supposed to market a kid. Is there a point where you need to back off? My son is only 16 right now but we feel we might be behind a little. When do "People" start talking to him or us? Have only heard that the "People" have been talking to the coach. I would appreciate any help with this topic.
