Or really any base I guess, but since I coach 1B for two of our teams I get to see a lot of close and not-so-close plays at first. For the umps here with us, what do you look for and or listen for when making calls on plays at 1B?
I'm not sure if this is the best way but I usually watch the base and listen for the ball to hit the 1B's mitt. It works for me even on really close plays, unless of course the throw's in the dirt or takes 1B off the base. I'm not as concerned about those situation though. By using this method I've really had only 4 or 5 plays so close that I couldn't call it, nor could I argue with FU making a call either way.
I had an ump tell me he watches the mid-point of the runner's body to determine out or safe. Don't really understand that one.
Thoughts on the appropriate and not-so-appropriate methods for making this call?
Jon
