Howard's injury

A home run is a deadball situation. A substitute would have finished touching the bases.

A similar play like this happened in Boston a few years ago. Gabe Kapler (I think) was on base when another player hit a HR.

He tore his achillies half way to third and couldn't continue around the bases. The hitter stopped before second and waited a good 5-10 minutes while they tended to Kapler. A PR went in when he was finally removed from the field and both runners then completed rounding the bases.

A pretty bizzare play to witness.

The same thing that should have happened in the softball game you referenced, put in a PR and finish the award.

Say he hit it off the wall "live ball," he would have had to at least hop on the one leg to first before being throuwn out, correct?

Yes, we had a situation a couple of years ago where a kid hit an one hop to the fence scoring two runs. The problem was he ripped his knee and went down ten feet from the plate where he was eventially tagged out.
