You can buy a special racquet for catcher pop ups.

Let the ball get away from your body and hit it once it gets below your waist. NEVER bring one of those rackets out during pregame...save them for practice. Most HS fields are rough to get a good one, with tight backstops

If you have the arm strength, you can throw a lot of pop-ups as I have in the past. Sometimes the bat works and sometimes I have to go to the arm.

Throwing the ball doesnt accomplish anything...you need the backspin off the bat to get the full effect...better off just letting it go if you arent comfortable hitting it....they should have a cage set aside at the range for all of us fungo hitters!!!! lol

Throwing the ball with back spin accomplishes everything I need it to. A fastball grip has nothing but back spin. Get it up good and high and its still a pop up. I have been hitting and throwing them for over 30 years, and some days its kinda, whatever works.

my coach does it pretty well. Hes even got it to land directly back down on the plate sometimes. Our school has a pretty close backstop though, but there is a school in our district that had a major league distance backstop almost, probably about 10 feet closer at the most.
