What are some of the best/unique team fundraisers you have come across or been involved with? With the economy being what it is, a difficult task, has become nearly impossible. We're looking at our out of pocket costs to double or triple unless we come up with some way to make up the difference, and with potentially 2 boys on the teams, it is going to get prohibitively expensive real quick.

I have recently secured 14 local merchants to offer a discount that will be on the backside of a "card" that has our team logo on the front, no cost to merchant, we are selling them for $10 each and the discounts are for one year, unlimited. Should be able to sell some and aside from my cost to print and laminate its all profit. One community sold 400 last season for 4000.00.
I assume you're talking about a travel team. You should be incorporated as a not for profit. If not, that's another conversation that needs to take place. If you are and it's allowed by the state law, run a daily numbers game based on the daily lottery. Sell monthly cards for $10. Winners get $50. We sold $2,500 worth of cards. Four people won. Three told us to keep the mmney. You can make the cards yourself in desktop publishing to save money. Use heavy weighted paper.
Our boosters did a comedy night/dinner that was pretty successful. We found a group of comics that were reasonable and we held down our overhead by renting an inexpensive hall and covered the bar with our own beverages and bartenders. The cost may not be exact but I'll try to give you a breakdown.

Hall - $500
Food - $1,000 ($10.00 per person @ 100 people)
Bar - $500 - $700 (parent tended bar and we purchased drinks)
Comics(3) - $750 total
Total cost - $2,750

We sold approx 100 tickets @ $60 each and cleared over $3,000. (Truth is we had already advertised the price thinking the food would have cost us much more or we would have sold the event for $45 or $50)

We also had a $250 50/50 at the event and held a silent auction on donated gifts that yielded another $1,000.

The players sold the tickets however this was a 21 and over event so they couldn't attend. We still made sure on our selling literature that we were very clear that there may be some colorful language. Didn't want any offended grandma's out there. Smile

All totaled we brought in over $4,000 and the evening was a blast.

We've had good luck with crab feeds. This is the beginning of Dungeness Crab season here on the west coast, and if you get a hall and can organize a crab feed, you can make some siginificant money. To turn a profit, you have to get to about 200 people, and if you get up around 300 you can make some serious money. One local feed that has been around for a long time in our area gets 600+ people, and they make a LOT of money.
Golf tournaments work well for us, too. We also do a breakfast at Beef O'Brady's just like the one suggested at Applebee's.

I think pretty much every HS team has outfield banners, where a sponsor pays a fee to have their banner displayed on the outfield fence, and the sponsorship goes to pay all or part of the player fees.

We also had an Alumni Day game. It was a lot of fun, but didn't make much money in the short run. In the long run, it got a lot of alumni who had sort of lost touch to get involved in the program again, many as sponsors, so it was a good thing.
We just held a "Battle of the Bands" yesterday. One of our fathers made a deal with a local restaurant, found 8 bands (all were amazing) and made a deal.

The team got 100% of all tickets sold (each family sold 10 each) a percent of any food/beverages sold outside. We did have to acquire a permit to block off the street and hire off duty police but that was the extent. Each parent worked a two hour shift.

Best % of profit to date with the least amount of effort.
