VHSL regulates a max of 20 regular season games. Is this enough, too little too much? It just seems that the season is just starting when its playoff time. Any thoughts? It would be fun to have some weekend games scheduled against competition that you don't normally get to play and Saturdays would allow a little more travel.

For us it is too little. We had several rainouts last year from schools outside our district that we could not make up due to conflicts with their schedule. Also, we play schools in our district twice before the playoffs and even though you know many of the kids from youth baseball, they change - sometimes drastically - over the years. Also maybe more games would help the coaches loosen up and play their backups in some games. Double headers on every other or every third Sat. would be great.

I guess I would like to see more than 20 games. But, I still think the season needs to end right around graduation time, as it does right now. That would mean probably some DHs sprinkled in.

My bigger frustration is with our county regulations. They limit the amount of days we can play over spring break and also do not allow us to travel out of state.

Our coach and many parents would love the chance to play some games out of state (i.e. NC, SC, GA or FL). I know that some VA baseball teams do it and quite a few basketball teams do it over winter break.
Given the talent in the state now the Va. High School league should increase the number of games allowed. Playing DH's on Saturdays, maybe 3 or 4 more dates, would give people 6-8 more games. If players and coaches are willing there should be no problems. Now some will say that teams don't have that much pitching but if you play and have a few 13-11 games at least your playing and kids are getting more opportunities to improve.
They need to allow for early season travel games to warmer places. Once district play starts you are limited due to rainy spring weather thus causing crazy makeup dates. As for as season ending near graduation I think that is great unless you make it to the state semis. Some kids in the northern regions have been known to miss their graduation ceremonies which I feel is sad. State finals could be the week after graduation. This would allow for more of each teams student body to attend thus generating more revenue for each venue.

You make some great points. Unfortunately, it seems to me so many families in the Fairfax and Loudoun areas go on vacation almost immediately after school ends. One of the best indicators is that once school lets out, "rush hour" isn't as bad....that is until around Labor Day! So I am not so sure that moving the state finals until after graduation would help attendance/revenue that much.

I totally agree with you that it's a bummer that some of these kids miss their graduation ceremony. To a lesser extent, I have heard some kids have had to miss their prom. However, this usually affects very few kids in the big scheme of things. Speaking for only my son, I guarantee you if he had to make a choice of being in a graduation ceremony or playing in the state finals.....well, I think you know what the answer would be..................
Post from an anxious grandpa: Oldest grandson attended Holiday showcase at Ft Meyers Jan. 7-8.He is an '06 Sr. MIF. Family and participant are patiently waitingto hear grade reports. I was there and impressed by the PG operation. Don't know if he is D-1 material but am convinced they know what they are doing. JMU or UVA would be great but a level below that may be a better fit.UVA Med. school class '71
I don't think the length of the calendar needs to change just need to be able to add a few more dates with Saturday games. Even if it was just 4 games. Also in regards to graduation if a school gets into the finals like Osbourn did last year and the game schedule conflicts with graduation they should move the game back 1 day to allow the kids to participate in graduation.
