Had the most enjoyable experience yesterday...

Got a pm from Backstop17 yesterday morning that he would be driving down to Port Charlotte Florida (from Tampa) to meet us at my son's minor league game. He actually beat us to the game as my wife and I left after batting practice to go have a couple of Margarita's at 11:30 in the morning before the 1:00 game was to begin Big Grin

After we met up at the game, we proceeded to talk baseball the rest of the way. We talked about how he had met Coach May and knew floridafan as their son's are teammates at Univeristy of Tampa. We played the Red Sox yesterday and it became apparent how small the baseball world was. Every other kid it seems either him or me had a story to to tell. He would let me know all the kids his son had played with or against in high school and/or college. As another kid came up to the plate, I said "Watch that Derick Gibson kid as he is quite the player and I know that PGStaff (Jerry) loves him too" We talked about college ball and especially all the challenges these kids face everyday just to see their names in the lineup. We talked about teamwork and being great teammates and how that can help with individual performance as well.

As the game was ending, I had drifted over to chat with another parent for a minute who we had met years earlier. When I approached Backtop17 to say good bye, he gave me a book about Paul O'Neill and his father. I was thrilled to receive such a thoughtful gift. When I opened the book to read it this morning, it had a wonderful hand-written note to me on the first page and I want to say personally, how thankful I am for that. It was a great day talking baseball with a knowledgable baseball Dad. Just before leaving, my son walked over and I introduced them. I said, "His son plays at University of Tampa" My son immediately said, "Oh, do you know Koronis? (my son's teammate)" which of course he did as that player was drafted from Tampa University.

Each time I meet someone in baseball, I go back to that thought. Small world indeed.

Thanks Backstop17 (Eric) for coming down and watching the game and thanks for the nice gift and note!

The book is call Me and My Dad. I received the book from my wife and son for Christmas several years back and proceeded to read the book from cover to cover within 36 hours. I have subsequently given the book as a gift to my son's coach who is also a father of one son.

A recommended read for any Father who has a strong relationship with his dad and son.
Yes it was certainly a great pleasure meeting CD and seeing his son in action. Dan has provided so much positive feed back to many on the message board here, and he is no different when you meet him in person. I enjoyed meeting his wife and her great personality. She was cheering on every player of her son’s team, great hit, great play, great pitch. I believe Tyler gets a lot of his emotion for the game from her as it was apparent he plays with a positive attitude at all times.

I have gone to the Phillies/Yankees/Jays/Rays spring complexes to watch the MILB teams compete on several occasions. I find it eye opening the passion that is required to play the game at all levels. Playing 7 days a week, putting in at least 8 hours a day, grinding away the players work on their craft and you can see all types – the quiet competitor, the hustler, the dawdler – the same things you will see on a college team. What you don’t see a lot of is the supporter – which is what Tyler Bortnick is. Lifting his team mates up and really embracing the game with joy.

I know that Tyler will succeed in this game, one way or the other. I am sure the entire Rays staff is pleased with his zeal and true desire to play the game at the highest level. He has the attitude it will take to keep grinding through the long days and ups and downs the game will provide him. I think the best comment Dan told me was when someone from the front office asked Tyler where he sees himself playing when he gets his chance at the bigs – Tyler indicated he sees himself contributing initially as a utility guy – but he added in his reply something like “the guy I replace better not take more than a day off, or I’ll keep his spot.” That attitude is awesome!

Whether my son gets the opportunity to play after college is an unknown at this point, but knowing what it takes if he ever gets there is what CD and TPM and countless others provide to all of us here on the HSBBWEB and I am truly thankful for their friendship and capacity to provide honest and frankful feedback.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay Dan, and enjoy the awesome weather that South Florida is giving us this year!
