Our summer coach decided to use a play I used many years ago....we called it Hurricane because Miami of Florida used it to win a World Series game in the 80's.

Pitcher picks at 3b., but holds the ball. 3b dives as if ball got past him. We actually have players in the bullpen get in on the act, yelling as if the ball got away. One of the players will often kick the fence to make it sound as if the ball got away.

A couple of umpires have said that it is an illegal play and that the Coach will be tossed if he runs it....I've been unable to find a section in the rules that would cover this.

Any ideas?

This is a ruling that hinges on what rules your summer league plays under.....

Since this is a HS site, I always quote the NFHS rule.....in HS rules this is illegal under Obstruction rules...

Obstruction is any act (physical or verbal)...and you have a few of them.....a possible fake tag. the player in the dugout kicking the fence, and the team yelling it "got away".........

Under Fed rules, your getting called for obstruction, a base award is going to the runner and someone......hopefully the one who kicked the fence is ejected.....

If your playing under OBR or NCAA rules this is considered legal. The players are expected to be aware of their situation at all times.......
