"The following day, Bresnahan was fined by his manager and then released by the Bills’ parent club, the Cleveland Indians, for what they perceived as an affront to the integrity of the game."

Good for the parent club. An affront to the integrity of the game while a curiosity to some, should not be celebrated.

Best play ever? A play in which cheating is is the main ingredient? Hardly.

This is the type of play that would appropriately vie for that title:

Nope. Calling ball at levels I do involves lots of grey. In some games, we live in the grey.

Additionally, there is a level of cheating accepted in baseball. This however, is not it.

I see no grey in the example you cite. From beginning to end it was an act, as the parent team itself called it, an affront to the integrity of the game.

A curiosity, definitely. Humorous, perhaps. The best play ever. Not even close.

Do you really want umpires who marvel at cheating and admire plays like this working your games?

If I'm this guy's coach - I'm going nuts trying to get him out of the game so I can rip him a new one.

Yes. No disagreement. But would you suggest it as the best baseball play EVER as the OP did? That is where some of us have an issue.

For me as an old school guy there is no place for this in baseball. Between the lines as a coach or umpire I am not happy because of the disregrd for the game. I love the game, I'm a big fan, and I have told any kid I ever coached it is a 100+ year-old game I would not accept direspect of it. If I am the umpire I make the right call and eject him. If I am the coach he is done and suspended, and if I am in the stands I may find it amusing.
"and if I am in the stands I may find it amusing."

I wasn't the umpire for this game; were you? I wasn't the coach for either team for this game; were you? If not, then we agree ... it is amusing.
I love it ... I've crated a firestorm of opinion about something that we have all said; an exageration. I think I was in the 3rd grade when I understood that. When you say >>"I love the game, I'm a big fan, and I have told any kid I ever coached it is a 100+ year-old game I would not accept direspect of it<<" I bet you're flying your American flag and eating apple pie while you type ... 'cause everyone else here hates the game. Dang it, now I'm gonna hear it again for THAT comment! I actually think some of you DID break your mother's back if you stepped on a crack.
DaveOmary, are you TR's more evil twin. Smile Nobody ever said you didn't love the game, perhaps a different perspective. Coaches may love the game but they also want to win. This can cloud their perspective. Umpires look at it differently, we have a desire to keep the rules and try to make the game as fair and balanced as possible.
Plays like in the OP attack our sense of CSFP. That does not mean you will be personally attacked, simply disagreed with vehemently.

Are you not a man? Or are you DEVO?

I was commenting on playing the game the right way between the lines. For something like this play to happen in the minors is not amusing, ny opinion.

And yes I definitely love being an American....love America's pastime, and eating apple pie.
As for greatest catches ever I cannot access youtube form work to See MST's post but I have three submissions....Masato Akamatsu's catch for Yokahama is recent, Willie Mays' catch in the 54 Series against Vic Wertz, and as a lifelong Cardinal fan Steve Bartman's catch robbing Moises Alou....anything to keep those loser Cubbies from winning...right DaveO

Not a Cub fan ... I'm smarter than that. The Cubs fill the stands with goofy Cubs fans. No matter what. So - why pay for good players ... like Pujols? The stands will be full anyway.

Wow! If not a Cubs fans then South Sider and the Sox...Cubs are not as good in attendance as you may think...ranked 7th last year.....Cardinals ranked 4th....and trust me the Cubs are going to make a big push to sign Pujols.

12-15 months for Tommy John's. My point was that losing him today will get him back for most of next year. Losing him in June would take him out for the last few months of this year and all of next year; not to mention that you've got to scramble to find the talent. With several months of ball ahead, the Cards can look for a trade to get a strong starter (or find one in the farm system).

Yep. One of the numbers sites claimed Wainwright would have helped the Cards win 12 games this year. That's huge, especially if those losses are against Central Division teams.

Now that we've hijacked the thread. Big Grin
This is the Cubs year.......again. I mean anybody could have a bad century. I've been a Cubs fan for over 20 years and I hope they make a push for Pujols. I can't remember how much money / time is left on Soriano, Ramierez and Fukodome's contracts but they are killing the Cubs until they expire. If the contracts aren't up after the season I can't see the Cubs going after Pujols seriously.

That's what everyone here thinks. (that's what everyone thought last year, too, until the Giants showed up) I'm not one to look past 162 games. It's a long season. Things happen.

People are (claim to be) jumping on a Vegas over/under of 96.5 wins. Not me.
