Congrats to the Dolphins in pulling off one of the biggest upsets of the year. I'm sure after winning the state championship, the TCIS semi was somewhat anticlimactic for the Gators, but regardless, the Cape Henry team shocked area baseball fans with a 3-2 victory yesterday. After losing to Green Run earlier in the year, it just goes to show how far this young team has come over the course of the season.

Of course the loss takes nothing away from the great season Greenbrier had and IMO they are still the number 1 team in the area. It just goes to show you have to come ready and motivated to play every time you take the field in this game.

From the Pilot:

Cape Henry 3, Greenbrier 2

Tyler Ballard ripped a three-run home run in the fifth inning and Jake Wynkoop threw a four-hitter as the Dolphins ousted the state champion Gators (28-2).

Cape Henry................000 030 0—3 2 0

Greenbrier................100 001 0—2 4 0

W—Wynkoop (5-1). L—Richardson. HR—CH, Ballard (1).

GCA 2 - Cape Henry 3

What started out to be a pitchers duel ended up with a victory for CH. CH lefty pitcher, kept the bats quiet and off balance. Good job. With Richardson on the mound, he had 14 SO’s but would not be enough. In the 5th GCA had an error at 3rd, then a hit to LF, and #6 came up worked the count full then hit a HR to LF. That proved to be the winning runs. GCA had only 4 hits; 2 from Tiller and 1 from Richardson and Miller. Richardson gave up only 2 hits.

Congradulations to Josh Richardson for TCIS Player of the Year. Good luck at LibertySmile

Season over.

Still the GCA team made some noise around Tidewater. Glad to be part of the program.

CH will play NSA for the TCIS championship. Good luck to both.

I agree that the game was quite an upset, GCC is the best team in the area and CHCS obviously is not. However, Cape Henry has now beaten Greenbrier three of the last five times they played. The current (post Robert Morey) team has beaten them two of the last four. Three different pitchers (currently two sophs and a fresh) have combined for the two wins. In addition, one of GCCs victories -in the tournament last year - was a come from behind win with one out in the bottom of the seventh (the 1st game this year was a blowout victory by Greenbrier).

I'm not saying this to take anything away from Greenbrier, they're a great team with strength throughout the lineup. I'm just suggesting that perhaps they were not as surprised at the outcome as some others, who haven't followed the two teams recent battles.
I wish I had seen this game. I am sure it was well played by both teams. I've see GCA a few times this year. They execute the fundamentals better than any HS team I've seen this year; result of talent and coaching. I saw CH play once vs. Catholic. It was a extra inning pitching battle that ended on a home run by the CH pitcher in the bottom of the 8th to break a 1-1 tie. These are the type of games that really teach the kids how to battle. Good for CH and hats off to GCA for the state title.
