how did recruiting work? Do you feel it was harder bc you felt like you couldn't call coaches on your son's behalf, etc? Who did your son list as the contact person for HS ball...you or an assistant coach? Let me say I admire you all for your work...I know there are many challenges that come with coaching your own teenage son (but lots of good stuff too!)

p.s. A search of "Coaching son" was not helpful.

I'll be interested to see these replies - I was just asking myself the same question the other day.

Our son's travel coach has a son on the team. He is what we consider the prototypical coach's kid - he's a beast and gets the harshest treatment from the coach every practice and game. There is no special treatment for him.

This coach is very willing to talk to college coaches on his players' behalf, but I wondered how he manages that for his own kid? The assistants wouldn't do a quality job of speaking on this young man's behalf.

My son's former high school coach told us at a parents meeting that it wasn't his job to get the players college scholarships, that was the summer team coach's job! Works for me!

The above is definetly not good advice. Is that what parents think, that someone else is going to get their players a college scholarship and find the right fit?

I think you will find most people here who have been through the process and sent sons off to play ball (all levels) will tell you that they took the responsibility of helping their son to find the best "fit" for their player and would never leave it up to someone else to get the job done, even the coach.

You might want to ask this question to Coach May, I think that he is probably the only one I know of here who coached their son while in HS (being his coach). I am sure that as many college coaches that he knew, he let his sons accomplishments and skills do the talking when it came to recruiting and let his son take care of business as well andmade sure his son was seen and played in front of the right people.

There have been many discussions here about letting go, I do believe that most dads who coached their sons gave it up when they got to HS.

I personally think that any parent should never make a call to a college coach on son's behalf, and to be honest, most coaches are extremely polite, but would much rather the player make contact themselves.

You guys (not necessarily all those here) got a LOT to learn!

Thank you TPM you know me too well! My son was highly recruited while in hs. I have a great repore with all the college coaches in my area and there are many from major D1 to D3. Coaches call all the time and ask about players. Then send out questionaires to hs coaches and ask you to list not only the players that play for you that you believe can play in college but also players you have seen, coached against or are in your conference that fit the bill. I listed my son just like anyother kid.

When the recruiting heated up and coaches would call me I would never talk about my son unless I was asked. When they asked I simply told them I would send them a schedule and gave them the names of other hs coaches we played against and pro scouts that had seen him play. Many would try to get insight in who was recruiting him and who he liked. I would always refer them to him and allowed my son to take the lead on all of it.

The schools I thought were the best fit for my son he was not interested in. There was only one school he was interested in and thats where he ended up. I allowed him to be recruited like anyother player in our program. I never pump a player. I never give a false report. I am honest, period. And if they like them when they see them great. And if they dont I will help the player to the best of my ability find the right fit for them.

And yes it is my job to help my players. To each his own in that regard. I can only do what I believe is right.

Son's former high school coach would be of no help anyway so I'd much rather have son's summer team involved with assisting in the recruitment since they are two former major leaguers and are constantly fielding phone calls about the program's players. Their guidance has been excellent and they have brought in several D1 coaches to speak to the players about the recruitment process and what they need to do to get ready to play college baseball.

We're doing what we can and have great support from our program. Son's team is in some of the best summer tournaments in the nation this year and will be at the 17U WWBA in East Cobb as well. We've "learned a lot" about what to do in the summer to get noticed.

Strike 3,
Ok I understand now, I thought that you meant they would get your son a scholarship but what you meant was that they are helping in the learning process and your son will be exposed to good stuff this summer.
My son's HS coach had nothing to do with his recruitment, we relied on his summer travel programs well. At the time my son was in HS, HS coaches were not allowed to coach except in season.

Bit Caoch May is correct, there are some HS coaches who are very helpful in the process, example being the man himself. Smile

My son could play for Coach May any time. I certainly wasn't clear on why I said what I did in my first post.

I agree my son could as well, however, I have a feeling knowing Coach May (for many years), he's probably a lot different on the field than on the HSBBW. Smile He reminds me alot of my son's college pitching coach. Wink

I understand about not being clear in your post, that happens to me too. Roll Eyes
I, like Coach May never talked about my son unless specifically asked. On his paperwork I always listed my partner or a coach from another school as a reference.
What did happen when coaches did call and specifically asked about one of my SONS, I used it as an opportunity to introduce some of my other players or players in the area that I thought were good players.

I send many emails to coaches and this included information on my sons, however my boys were never at the top of the list. Coaches in return used my boys as a reference to compare some others. Ie. How is this player compared to this son?
I guess in hind site I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out. I did learn that ultimately true colors will show through and your instincts about trust and those that you always thought were full of BS usually are. It's a tough call when your boy/s are involved and folks try and get close.

I coach my son during the summer for a prominent showcase team. He is getting plenty of interest but when a coach asks me about him, I have always deferred to another coach in our organization or provided them with name sof scouts who have seen him. I politely tell the coach that he is my son and he needs to get his info from someone else. (Many times, they didn't know he was my son.)

I've always felt this was the best approach.
Coach May - all is going well for the boys. I guess having older brother around is helping Mike. He's been playing well and now there is always someone to help with the extra work.

TPM - Hope your doing well. Yes, I just felt getting up in the morning it was something to write about. Everyday seems to now be filled with calls and questions. It's been kind of fun.

If you would like to contribute at any time just send it over..Catchaprospect is supposed to contribute on pitch counts and I added JH previous post today.
